Google is bringing Gemini capabilities to Google Maps Platform | TechCrunch

May 14, 2024 - techcrunch.com
Google has announced the addition of Gemini model capabilities to its Maps Platform for developers, beginning with the Places API. The new feature, announced at the Google I/O 2024 conference, will enable developers to display generative AI summaries of places and areas on their apps and websites. These summaries are generated from the analysis of insights from over 300 million contributors to Google Maps. This means developers will no longer need to create their own custom descriptions of places, enhancing user experience in apps such as restaurant-booking platforms.

In addition to this, Google is introducing AI-powered contextual search results to the Places API. This will allow developers to show reviews and photos related to user searches. For instance, if a user searches for "dog-friendly restaurants," they will see a list of suitable restaurants along with relevant reviews and photos. While contextual search results are available globally, place and area summaries are currently only available in the U.S., with plans for expansion to other countries in the future.
