Google Photos introduces an AI search feature, 'Ask Photos' | TechCrunch

May 14, 2024 - techcrunch.com
Google is set to launch an experimental feature, Ask Photos, powered by its Gemini AI model, to Google Photos. The feature, which will be rolled out later this summer, will allow users to search their Google Photos collection using natural language queries. The AI will understand the content and metadata of the photos, making the search process more intuitive. Users can ask complex questions, like finding the "best photo from each of the National Parks I visited," and the AI will use signals like lighting, blurriness, and geolocation to determine the best photo.

The Ask Photos feature builds on the recent launch of Photo Stacks, which groups near-duplicate photos and uses AI to highlight the best ones. Users can also ask questions that require an almost human-like understanding of what’s in their photos, like asking Google Photos about the themes used for their child’s last four birthday parties. The feature will initially be supported in the U.S. in English and will be text-based. Google assures that users' personal data in Google Photos will not be used for ads and won't be used to train any other generative AI product.
