A quarter of U.S. teachers say AI tools do more harm than good in K-12 education

May 30, 2024 - pewresearch.org
A Pew Research Center survey conducted in fall 2023 reveals that a majority of teachers are uncertain about or see downsides to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in K-12 education. A quarter of public K-12 teachers believe that using AI tools in education does more harm than good, while only 6% think it does more good than harm. High school teachers are more likely to hold negative views about AI tools in education compared to elementary and middle school teachers.

In a separate survey, U.S. teens were asked about their experience with and views of ChatGPT, a generative AI tool, in their schoolwork. Among teens who have heard of ChatGPT, 19% say they have used it to help them with schoolwork, with usage more common among teens in higher grades. Teens' views on whether using ChatGPT is acceptable depend on what it's being used for, with 69% saying it's acceptable to use it to research new topics, 39% for solving math problems, and 20% for writing essays.
