AI can now identify fake luxury goods

Dec 25, 2023 - businessinsider.com
Tech company Entrupy has developed an AI-powered device that can authenticate secondhand luxury items, such as handbags and sneakers, from brands like Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Balenciaga, and Gucci. The device, which is currently only available to luxury goods resellers, uses microscopic lenses to take detailed photos of the product, which are then cross-referenced with a database of authentic inventory using an AI algorithm. The company claims the device has a 99.1% accuracy rate.

The AI authenticator has gained renewed interest following a partnership with TikTok to identify fake products on its new e-commerce platform, TikTok Shop. However, Entrupy's CEO Vidyuth Srinivasan has admitted that the device can only authenticate accessories from major brands, as these are the most likely to be counterfeited.

Key takeaways:

  • Entrupy, a tech company, uses AI to authenticate designer handbags and sneakers in the resale market, ensuring that customers are buying genuine products.
  • The AI tool is currently only available to resellers of luxury goods and can authenticate products from luxury brands like Balenciaga, Burberry, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton.
  • Users are prompted to take photos of the product from every possible angle using Entrupy's hardware device, which are then cross-referenced with a database of authentic inventory using an AI algorithm. The company claims a 99.1% accuracy rate.
  • Despite its success, Entrupy's CEO admits that the tool can only authenticate accessories from major brands as those are the ones most prone to being fraudulent.
