AI Helps Chipmakers Design the Very Processors That Speed Up AI

Dec 13, 2023 - cnet.com
Intel is utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the design and manufacturing of its new Meteor Lake processor. AI tools are used to catch bugs early in the design process, speeding up time to market, and to oversee manufacturing, increasing the number of usable silicon slices. For Meteor Lake, Intel's first major processor made of multiple "chiplets", AI tools help determine the best way to sell each processor given slight differences in each processor's components.

The use of AI in processor production is a new development. AI systems, trained to recognize patterns in complex real-world data, are now aiding humans in better managing processor production. Intel is combining AI tools from outside chip design companies with its own internally developed tools. The company is also testing generative AI tools that process detailed written specifications for a chip to create tests that ensure chip designs meet those specs.

Key takeaways:

  • Intel is using artificial intelligence to optimize the design and manufacturing of its new Meteor Lake processor, increasing the number of sellable units and speeding up the time to market.
  • AI tools are used to catch bugs early in the design process and oversee manufacturing, ensuring more of the silicon slices end up in products rather than waste.
  • AI is also used to determine the best way to sell each processor, considering the slight differences in each processor's components.
  • Other companies such as Cadence, Synopsys, Google, and Nvidia are also using AI-boosted tools for processor design, indicating a growing trend in the industry.
