AI plushie Grok, voiced by Grimes, was trademarked before Elon Musk's Grok | TechCrunch

Dec 15, 2023 - techcrunch.com
Grimes is entering the toy industry with a character named "Grok" for Curio's new line of AI plushies. The toy, which is not associated with Elon Musk's AI chatbot also named Grok, is designed to encourage play and creativity in children. The plushies, which also include characters Gabbo and Grem, can hold full conversations to help kids practice their communication skills. They contain a rechargeable, Wi-Fi-connected speaker and mic, allowing parents to monitor interactions.

The toys are available for preorder until Sunday, priced at $99 each, and are recommended for children aged 3 to 7. Grimes got involved with Curio after responding to a post about the future of AI-integrated toys. The launch of these toys comes a week after Musk's ChatGPT competitor, also named Grok, began rolling out to X Premium Plus subscribers. Despite the name overlap, Grimes' Grok was trademarked first.

Key takeaways:

  • Grimes has partnered with Curio to create a line of screen-free AI plush toys, including a character named Grok that she voices.
  • The toy is not affiliated with the AI chatbot Grok, backed by Grimes' ex Elon Musk. The two Groks were named independently and coincidentally.
  • The plush toys are designed to hold full conversations, encouraging children to develop their communication skills. They are Wi-Fi-connected and linked to an app for parental setup and monitoring.
  • Grimes' involvement with Curio came after she responded to a post about the future of AI-integrated toys, expressing interest in the idea of a "culture ship mind in a teddy bear" for her children.
