AI-powered nutrition app Alma raises funding from Menlo and Anthropic

Feb 05, 2025 - businessinsider.com
Alma, a nutrition startup founded by Rami Alhamad, launched its AI-driven mobile app on Apple's app store. The app, which analyzes eating habits and suggests foods, allows users to log meals by texting, talking, or uploading pictures. Alma's technology references Harvard University's nutrition source and is supported by a nutrition science advisory board, including Dr. Eric Rimm. The startup received $2.9 million in pre-seed funding from Menlo Ventures and the Anthropic Anthology Fund. Alhamad, who previously worked at Whoop, developed Alma through Menlo's fellowship and incubator programs.

The app aims to simplify nutrition tracking, a process Alhamad and Menlo Ventures partner Shawn Carolan found cumbersome compared to exercise tracking. Alma enters a competitive market with established apps like MyFitnessPal and Noom, as well as newer AI-driven apps like Cal AI and Hexis. Alma is available for a subscription fee of $19 monthly or $199 annually.
