AI reveals prostate cancer is not just one disease | University of

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has aided scientists in discovering a new form of aggressive prostate cancer, potentially revolutionizing future diagnosis and treatment. The study, funded by Cancer Research UK and published in Cell Genomics, revealed that prostate cancer includes two different subtypes, or evotypes. The international team, led by the University of Oxford and The University of Manchester, used AI to analyze DNA data and identify the two subtypes. The findings could lead to more personalized treatments based on genetic tests delivered using AI.

The research was part of an international consortium, The Pan Prostate Cancer Group, which analyzed genetic data from thousands of prostate cancer samples across nine countries. The team's collaboration with Cancer Research UK aims to develop a genetic test that, combined with conventional staging and grading, can provide a more precise prognosis for each patient. The researchers used AI to study changes in the DNA of prostate cancer samples from 159 patients, identifying two distinct cancer groups. This finding was validated in other independent datasets from Canada and Australia.
