AI System Helped Cops Identify a Drug Trafficker Just by Analyzing His Driving Patterns

Jul 17, 2023 - gizmodo.com
Police in New York used AI technology from a company called Rekor to identify and arrest a drug trafficker, David Zayas. The AI-driven "roadway intelligence" platform analyzed traffic patterns and identified Zayas as suspicious based on his frequent trips between Massachusetts and upstate New York, routes known to be used by narcotics pushers. The system, which uses 480 cameras to scan 16 million vehicles a week, helped police find a large amount of crack cocaine, a gun, and over $34,000 in cash in Zayas' vehicle.

The use of AI in surveillance systems is increasing, with the technology able to identify criminal activity by observing driver behavior. However, concerns are being raised about the potential for misuse of this technology and the need for regulations to prevent invasion of privacy. The hope is that governments will find a way to use this technology responsibly.

Key takeaways:

  • Police in New York used AI technology from a company called Rekor to identify and apprehend a drug trafficker, David Zayas.
  • Rekor's software analyzes traffic patterns and uses an automatic license plate recognition system to identify suspicious behavior.
  • In Zayas' case, the software determined that his frequent trips between Massachusetts and upstate New York, along with short stays, were consistent with the behavior of a drug trafficker.
  • The use of AI in surveillance systems is increasing, raising concerns about privacy and the potential for misuse of the technology.
