Alibaba opens AI model Tongyi Qianwen to the public

Sep 13, 2023 - reuters.com
Alibaba has announced it will open its artificial intelligence model, Tongyi Qianwen, to the public, indicating it has received Chinese regulatory approval to mass-market the model. The move comes as China increases its support for companies developing AI, a technology that is becoming a key area of competition with the US. Several organizations, including OPPO, Taobao, DingTalk, and Zhejiang University, have agreed to train their own large language models or develop language model applications based on Tongyi Qianwen.

The company's Cloud Intelligence Division also revealed that an open-source version of the large language model would soon be available for free commercial use. This announcement follows the recent resignation of Alibaba's Cloud division's chief, Daniel Zhang, who was replaced by Eddie Wu, the new CEO of Alibaba Group. In a letter to staff, Wu emphasized the central role of AI in Alibaba's future strategy, warning that failure to adapt to AI advancements could lead to displacement.
