Amazon finally releases its own AI-powered image generator at AWS re:Invent 2023 | TechCrunch

Nov 29, 2023 - techcrunch.com
Amazon has introduced Titan Image Generator, a new AI model that can create or customize images based on text descriptions. The tool, which is part of Amazon's Titan family of generative AI models, is available for preview on Bedrock, Amazon's AI development platform. The company claims the model was trained on a diverse set of datasets and includes built-in mitigations for toxicity and bias. However, Amazon did not disclose the source of these datasets or whether it had obtained permission from the creators of the images used for training.

The Titan Image Generator also features a "tamper-resistant" invisible watermark on images it creates, a move aimed at curbing the spread of AI-generated misinformation and abusive imagery. This is in line with a voluntary commitment around AI that Amazon signed with the White House in July. Despite these features, concerns remain among developers and Fortune 500 companies about intellectual property rights and the potential for AI models to produce exact copies of training examples.

Key takeaways:

  • Amazon has released an image generator, Titan Image Generator, which is now available for AWS customers on Bedrock, Amazon’s AI development platform.
  • The Titan Image Generator can create new images or customize existing ones based on text descriptions, and includes built-in mitigations for toxicity and bias.
  • Amazon will protect customers accused of violating copyright with images generated by Titan Image Generator, in line with its AI indemnification policy.
  • Images created with Titan Image Generator will come with a “tamper-resistant” invisible watermark by default, as part of Amazon's commitment to mitigate the spread of AI-generated misinformation and abuse imagery.
