Amazon Signs AI Deal To Bring NYT Newspaper Content To Alexa+

May 29, 2025 - silicon.co.uk
The New York Times has entered a content licensing agreement with Amazon, allowing its editorial content to be featured across Amazon platforms, including the AI assistant Alexa+. This deal marks the first time the NYT has agreed to a licensing arrangement focused on generative AI technology. The agreement includes content from NYT Cooking and The Athletic, and aligns with the NYT's principle of valuing high-quality journalism. Alexa+, which Amazon unveiled in February 2025, is offered free to Prime members, potentially expanding its reach to 200 million customers worldwide.

Separately, the NYT had previously sued OpenAI and its main investor Microsoft for copyright infringement in December 2023, marking the first major US media organization to do so. Despite attempts by OpenAI and Microsoft to dismiss the case, it continues, with additional lawsuits from other media outlets following suit. In March 2025, Judge Sidney Stein dismissed some claims but allowed the majority of the case to proceed, possibly leading to a jury trial.
