Amazon's AWS unveils new supercomputer with its AI chips in a challenge to Nvidia

Dec 04, 2024 - fastcompany.com
Amazon's cloud unit, Amazon Web Services (AWS), unveiled new data center servers equipped with its own AI chips, Trainium2, set to compete with Nvidia. The servers will be used in a supercomputer comprising hundreds of thousands of chips, with AI startup Anthropic being the first to use it. Apple has also confirmed its use of the Trainium2 chips. Despite Nvidia's 70% market share in AI chips, rivals such as Advanced Micro Devices are trying to catch up, and customers like Meta Platforms, Microsoft, and Google are developing their own custom AI chips.

AWS's new servers, named Trn2 UltraServers, will compete directly with Nvidia’s flagship server, which uses 72 of its latest “Blackwell” chips. AWS also plans to debut its next-generation AI chip, Trainium3, next year. AWS claims it can connect a greater number of chips together than Nvidia, offering a competitive edge. The new chips are designed for demanding AI training and inference workloads, according to AWS Chief Executive Matt Garman.
