Android Studio adds 'agentic AI' with Journeys feature, Agent Mode | TechCrunch

May 20, 2025 - techcrunch.com
Google announced at its Google I/O 2025 developer conference that Android Studio, the IDE for Android app developers, is receiving an AI upgrade with the integration of the Gemini 2.5 Pro model. New features include "Journeys," which allows developers to test apps by describing user actions in natural language, and "Agent Mode," which assists with complex development tasks like API integration. These features aim to streamline app testing and development by reducing the need for extensive coding and speeding up the process of shipping high-quality code. The results of these tests will be available directly in the IDE, and developers can access these experimental AI features through a new "Studio Labs" menu.

Additionally, Google is introducing Android Studio Cloud, which streams a Linux machine running Android Studio to a web browser, enabling development from anywhere with internet access. Other AI enhancements include improvements to the App Quality Insights panel, automatic generation of Jetpack Compose preview code, and a Version Upgrade Agent for automating dependency upgrades. Google is also launching an enterprise-ready version of Android Studio with Gemini for businesses, offering data-safe AI deployment. Further updates include resizable previews, navigation improvements, and tools to prepare for Android's 16KB page size architecture change.
