Bing Chat is now Microsoft Copilot, to better compete with ChatGPT

Nov 15, 2023 - theverge.com
Microsoft is rebranding its Bing Chat AI interface to Microsoft Copilot, less than a year after its initial launch. The rebranding comes as Microsoft aims to compete with OpenAI's ChatGPT, which has 100 million weekly users. Microsoft Copilot will be available as a free version and a paid version for Microsoft 365, and will be accessible via a dedicated domain, copilot.microsoft.com.

The move away from Bing is significant as Microsoft had initially launched its AI efforts within its search engine to compete with Google. However, Bing will continue to power many Copilot experiences. Microsoft Copilot is currently officially supported only in Microsoft Edge or Chrome, and on Windows or macOS.

Key takeaways:

  • Microsoft is rebranding its Bing Chat to Microsoft Copilot, which will be the new name for the chat interface used in Bing, Microsoft Edge, and Windows 11.
  • The company is positioning Copilot as the primary option for consumers and businesses seeking AI assistants, competing directly with OpenAI's ChatGPT.
  • Microsoft Copilot will be available as a free AI chatbot, with a paid version for Microsoft 365. It will have its own dedicated domain at copilot.microsoft.com.
  • Despite the rebranding, Microsoft maintains that Bing remains a significant part of Copilot, powering many of its experiences while continuing to be a leader in the search industry.
