Bluesky says it won’t train AI on your posts

Nov 15, 2024 - theverge.com
Social network Bluesky has stated that it does not intend to use user content to train generative AI tools, a move that comes just before competitor X's new terms of service that allow it to analyze user text and other data for its AI tools. Bluesky's statement comes in response to concerns from artists and creators about other platforms using their data. However, the company's robots.txt does not prevent other companies from scraping Bluesky posts for training. Bluesky uses AI for content moderation and its Discover feed, but not for generative AI systems trained on user content.

Bluesky has seen rapid growth, with over three million new users in the past week, bringing its total to 17 million as users seek alternatives to X. This growth has led to increased spam, scam, and trolling activity, and the company is expanding its moderation team in response. Meanwhile, Meta's Threads, another competitor, has gained over 15 million signups this month and is testing custom feeds, a feature Bluesky is known for. Unlike Bluesky, Meta has admitted to training its AI models on nearly all public posts since 2007.

Key takeaways:

  • Social network Bluesky has stated that it does not use user content to train its generative AI tools, unlike its competitor X.
  • Bluesky's robots.txt does not exclude crawlers from Google, OpenAI, or others, meaning these companies may still crawl Bluesky data.
  • Bluesky uses AI for content moderation and in its algorithmic Discover feed, but not for training on user content.
  • Bluesky has grown by more than three million people in the past week, crossing 17 million users, as users seek alternatives to other microblogging platforms like X and Meta's Threads.
