Brits are scrolling away from X and aren't that interested in AI

Nov 29, 2024 - theregister.com
Elon Musk's social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), is experiencing a decline in usage in the UK, according to Ofcom's Online Nation report. The report shows that the total UK adult reach of X has fallen from 26.8 million in May 2022 to 22.1 million in May 2024, a year-on-year decline of 8 percent. Despite global growth in social media users, X has been losing users over the past two years, even after Musk's acquisition of the business in 2022.

The report also reveals a slow adoption of generative AI tools among UK adults, with 38 percent expressing disinterest and 35 percent stating they did not need to use them. Google's search engine dominance in the UK also slipped, and Microsoft's Bing saw a further decline. Despite heavy investment in AI by both companies, ChatGPT remains the most popular GenAI tool, with Microsoft's Copilot and Google's Gemini trailing behind.

Key takeaways:

  • Usage of Elon Musk's social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), is declining in the UK, with a year-on-year decline of 8 percent in May 2024, according to Ofcom's Online Nation report.
  • X has suffered the most significant fall in total adult use of all social media sites, sliding down the rankings to sixth, behind Reddit.
  • Google's search engine dominance in the UK has also slipped slightly over the year, with 83 percent of online adults visiting in May 2024 compared to 86 percent the year before.
  • AI adoption in the UK is sluggish, with more than half of adults in the survey yet to use GenAI, and less than one in five (18 percent) trusting the output.
