ByteDance’s Doubao is China’s top AI bot with 51 million active users

Nov 13, 2024 - scmp.com
Doubao, a conversational bot developed by ByteDance, the owner of TikTok, has become the most popular AI app in China, with 51 million monthly active users. Despite its unclear profit model, the app has surpassed competitors such as Baidu’s Wenxiaoyan and Alibaba-backed Moonshot AI’s Kimi, which have 12.5 million and 10 million users respectively. The app, launched in August, offers a range of capabilities including writing emails, summarising texts, and supporting image, audio and video generation, data analysis, and AI-powered online search.

ByteDance has not yet revealed plans to monetise Doubao, despite the high costs associated with training such large language model applications. The app has been praised for its effectiveness in editing and improving text, and for its logical organisation of content. Despite its rich features, users find the app easy to use. It is available on its official website as well as on Android and iOS app stores, and is considered to have some of the most versatile capabilities among both local and global peers.
