CentML raises $27M to speed up AI inference and training - SiliconANGLE

Oct 25, 2023 - siliconangle.com
AI startup CentML has secured $27 million in a seed funding round led by Alphabet Inc.’s Gradient Ventures, with participation from Nvidia Corp., Deloitte Ventures, Thomson Reuters Ventures, and Radical Ventures. The company, founded by AI researchers from the University of Toronto, has developed an open-source tool called Hidet that enhances the performance of AI models and reduces the cost of running them. Hidet optimizes the code of neural networks, improving performance and packaging the AI into CUDA kernels, code pieces optimized to run on Nvidia's GPUs.

CentML claims its software accelerates AI models without compromising their accuracy or necessitating manual code changes. The company also offers another open-source tool, DeepView, which enables developers to monitor and accelerate the training of an AI model. The funds raised will be used for product development, research initiatives, and hiring additional employees to support the company's growth.

Key takeaways:

  • AI startup CentML has raised $27 million in a seed round led by Alphabet Inc.’s Gradient Ventures startup fund, with contributions from Nvidia Corp., Deloitte Ventures, Thomson Reuters Ventures, and Radical Ventures.
  • CentML has developed an open-source tool, Hidet, that optimizes AI models' inference performance and reduces the cost of running them. It also maintains another open-source project, DeepView, that focuses on speeding up AI training.
  • The company claims its software can speed up AI models without decreasing their accuracy or requiring developers to manually change code. In one project, it made Meta Platform Inc.’s open-source Llama 2 model run three times faster.
  • CentML plans to use the funding to invest in product development and research initiatives, and to hire additional employees to support its growth efforts.
