ChatGPT just improved its creative writing chops | Digital Trends

Nov 21, 2024 - digitaltrends.com
OpenAI has announced an update to its ChatGPT's latest large language model, GPT-4o, which is expected to provide more natural, engaging, and tailored writing to improve relevance and readability. The model, which is not to be confused with 01 (formerly Project Strawberry), surpasses GPT-4 and GPT-3.5 and offers users double the performance at half the resource cost of its predecessor, GPT-4-Turbo. It also provides state-of-the-art benchmark results in voice, multilingual, and vision tasks. The model's rapid response pace makes it useful for real-time translation and conversation applications, and it has improved reasoning skills over its predecessors.

However, GPT-4o is not available for unlimited use to every OpenAI subscriber level, including the free tier. Free-tier users can only access the new model a few times on ChatGPT before being moved to interact with the smaller GPT-4o-mini model. GPT-4o-mini, which is based on the same training data as its larger sibling, is lighter-weight and more responsive, making it useful in a variety of small-scale applications including computer code generation. OpenAI claims GPT-4o mini is the most capable and cost-efficient small model available today, out-performing competitors in a variety of benchmarks.

Key takeaways:

  • OpenAI's latest large language model, GPT-4o, has received a performance boost, offering more natural, engaging, and tailored writing.
  • GPT-4o is more efficient than older versions and offers additional capabilities such as real-time translation and conversation applications.
  • While GPT-4o is available to all OpenAI subscriber levels, it is not available for unlimited use. Free-tier users can only access the new model a limited number of times on ChatGPT.
  • OpenAI has also introduced an Advanced Voice Mode integration for PCs and Macs, enabling users to speak directly with ChatGPT without the need for text prompts.
