Code Assist, Google's enterprise-focused coding assistant, gets third-party tools | TechCrunch

Dec 17, 2024 - techcrunch.com
Google has announced the integration of third-party tools into Gemini Code Assist, its AI-driven code completion service for enterprises. Initially launched in April as a rebranded version of its previous Duet AI service, Code Assist is available as a plugin for popular development environments like VS Code and JetBrains. Powered by Google's Gemini AI models, the service can now incorporate real-time data and external application information, aiming to streamline the coding process by reducing context switching. Currently, only Google Cloud partners can develop tools for Code Assist, with initial offerings from GitLab, GitHub, Sentry.io, Atlassian Rovo, Snyk, and Google Docs.

Code Assist competes directly with GitHub's Copilot Enterprise, but Google highlights its unique features, such as support for on-premises codebases. The service has received several updates this year, including improved code transformation capabilities and an enterprise plan offering customized code suggestions based on private repositories. Despite concerns over security, copyright, and reliability, AI-powered coding tools have gained popularity among developers. GitHub reported that Copilot had over 1.8 million paying users and more than 50,000 business customers as of April.
