Desktop GPU shipments jumped by a third – no thanks to AI PCs

Mar 06, 2024 - theregister.com
Graphics-focused analyst firm Jon Peddie Research (JPR) reports that shipments of consumer-grade GPUs grew 32% year over year in Q4 2023, reaching 9.5 million units. However, JPR analyst Jon Peddie believes that the growth is not driven by the emergence of AI PCs, but rather by improved availability and lower prices. He also suggests that the AI PC is currently more of a marketing tool to sell systems with neural processing units (NPUs), and that software infused with AI is lagging behind AI PC hardware.

In terms of market share, Nvidia remains the dominant player in the desktop graphics arena with 80% of the market. However, AMD saw the greatest growth during Q4 2023, with GPU shipments increasing 17% quarter-on-quarter and 117% year-on-year. This led to a 7% gain in market share for AMD, while Nvidia's share contracted by 2%. Intel, a newcomer to the consumer graphics market, held just 1% of the market share as of Q4 2023.

Key takeaways:

  • Consumer-grade GPU shipments grew 32% year over year in Q4 2023, but this growth is not attributed to the emergence of AI PCs, according to Jon Peddie Research.
  • The real driver for GPU sales is improved availability driving down prices, making new cards more attractive to consumers.
  • Nvidia maintained its dominance in the desktop graphics market with 80% market share, but AMD saw the greatest growth during the holiday quarter with a 7% share gain.
  • Intel's efforts in the consumer graphics market have only yielded a 1% market share as of Q4 2023, down from 2% in the final quarter of 2022.
