Chinese ride-hailing company Didi is seeking additional funding for its autonomous vehicle (AV) technology unit, aiming for a valuation of $5 billion. This move comes amid growing investor interest in self-driving cars in China, highlighted by recent IPOs from WeRide and Pony AI. Didi Autonomous Driving, established in 2020, has already raised $1.55 billion, including a $298 million round in October 2024. The company is in discussions with investors, including a Beijing-based fund, to secure several hundred million dollars more.
Didi's AV unit is currently testing around 200 autonomous vehicles in Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shanghai but has not yet launched commercial robotaxi services. The potential new funds are expected to aid in further AV technology development and accelerate the mass production of electric robotaxis in collaboration with EV manufacturer GAC Aion, with production slated to begin in 2025.
