Elon Musk's X Appears to Be Making Grok AI Free for Some Users

Nov 11, 2024 - gizmodo.com
X, formerly known as Twitter, is reportedly offering its AI chatbot Grok for free to some users. Previously, the product was only available to premium users. The free version was accessed by TechCrunch through a New Zealand-registered account, a common testing ground for new products. To be eligible for the free tier of Grok, accounts must be at least seven days old and have a linked phone number. Free users will have limitations, such as being able to ask only ten questions every two hours on the Grok 2 model, or twenty questions using the Grok 2 mini model, and analyzing up to three images per day.

Grok is developed by xAI, a company in Elon Musk’s orbit. The model is trained using content from X, providing access to near real-time information. Despite X's value dropping 79% since Musk's acquisition, xAI has raised $6 billion and is raising more at a $45 billion valuation. Investors who funded Musk’s purchase of Twitter have been given access to the xAI fundraise as a chance to recoup their investment.
