EU calls for help with shaping rules for general-purpose AIs | TechCrunch

Jul 31, 2024 - news.bensbites.com
The European Union (EU) has initiated a consultation on regulations for general-purpose AI models (GPAIs) providers, such as Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI, under its AI Act. The Act, which will be enforced from August 1, aims to ensure "trustworthy" GPAIs by providing developers with compliance guidelines. The consultation invites responses from GPAI providers operating in the EU, businesses, civil society representatives, rights holders, and academic experts. The consultation will inform the AI Office's work on the template for the summary of the content used for the training of the GPAIs and the accompanying guidance.

The consultation is divided into three sections: transparency and copyright-related provisions for GPAIs, rules on risk taxonomy, assessment and mitigation for GPAIs with systemic risk, and the reviewing and monitoring of Codes of Practices for GPAIs. An initial draft Code will be developed based on the submissions and answers to the targeted questions. The deadline for submissions is September 10, 2024. The EU is also inviting expressions of interest to participate in drafting the Code via virtual meetings divided into four working groups. The deadline for submitting an expression of interest is August 25, 2024.
