Everyone's buzzing about AI — including plenty of people who clearly don't understand it

Jan 17, 2024 - businessinsider.com
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the buzzword at this year's World Economic Forum in Davos, with many companies and governments expressing interest in it. However, there is a lack of deeper understanding on how to harness AI, with much focus on potential risks such as job displacement and not enough on its technical aspects or problem-solving capabilities. Big companies like Salesforce, Infosys, IBM, and Accenture are showcasing their commitment to AI, but there is a need for business leaders to look beyond how AI affects roles and tasks and start redesigning processes across their organizations.

Nela Richardson, chief economist at ADP, highlights a significant learning gap about what constitutes AI, with much of what is being called "generative AI" having been around for decades, while much of what workers think is AI is actually automation. Many businesses are trying to transition from the "glamour" to the "actual implementation" of AI, with some companies merely rebranding existing processes as AI. The true potential of AI for more complex tasks such as contextual thinking and healthcare applications is yet to be realized.
