Mar 19, 2024 - qz.com
Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, does not anticipate receiving Nvidia's new "Blackwell" AI chip this year, according to a company spokesperson. The announcement comes a day after Nvidia revealed its next-generation B200 chip, a more powerful successor to the H100 AI chip. Meta's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, expressed enthusiasm for using the Blackwell chip to train their open-source Llama models and develop the next generation of Meta AI and consumer products.

Meta, one of Nvidia's largest customers, had previously announced plans to increase its stock of older Nvidia chips. Nvidia's new B200 chips are expected to hit the market later this year, with the Blackwell chip priced between $30,000 and $40,000. The Blackwell chip, composed of 208 billion transistors, is expected to be 2.5 times faster at training AI and five times faster at inference than its predecessor.
