Flow Computing raises $4.3M to enable parallel processing to improve CPU performance by 100X

Jun 11, 2024 - venturebeat.com
Flow Computing, a Helsinki-based company, has raised $4.3 million in a funding round from Nordic investors and businesses. The company, which licenses ultra-high-performance parallel computing solutions to CPU vendors, claims it can achieve a 100-fold acceleration in computing power for central processing units (CPUs). Flow's new architecture, referred to as a Parallel Processing Unit (PPU), boosts CPU performance up to 100-fold and is fully backwards compatible with every existing software application for that CPU architecture.

The company is already in initial discussions with major semiconductor vendors from around the world seeking next-generation CPU performance. Participating entities in Flow’s pre-seed round include Butterfly Ventures, FOV Ventures, Sarsia, Stephen Industries, Superhero Capital and Business Finland. The company's technology is expected to have a significant impact on the computing industry, with applications in edge and cloud computing, AI clouds, multimedia codecs across 5G/6G, autonomous vehicle systems, military-grade computing and more.

Key takeaways:

  • Flow Computing has raised $4.3 million in funding from Nordic investors and businesses, emerging from stealth with a technology that claims to achieve a 100-fold acceleration in computing power for central processing units (CPUs).
  • The company's Parallel Processing Unit (PPU) architecture is capable of being integrated into any CPU design architecture, instruction set or process geometry, providing a significant acceleration that is immediately usable in standard computer designs.
  • Flow's technology eliminates the need for expensive graphics processing unit (GPU) acceleration of CPU instructions in performant applications, and is already in initial discussions with major semiconductor vendors from around the world.
  • Participating entities in Flow’s pre-seed round include Butterfly Ventures (lead VC), FOV Ventures, Sarsia, Stephen Industries, Superhero Capital and Business Finland. The company is a spinout from the acclaimed VTT Technical Research Center of Finland.
