Former head of NSA joins OpenAI board

Jun 14, 2024 - theverge.com
OpenAI has added retired US Army General and former National Security Agency (NSA) head, Paul M. Nakasone, to its board of directors. Nakasone, who led the NSA from 2018 to early 2021, will join OpenAI's Safety and Security Committee as a first priority and will contribute to the company's efforts to understand how AI can be used to strengthen cybersecurity.

The announcement comes amid recent departures from OpenAI, including co-founder and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever and Jan Leike. OpenAI's board now includes Nakasone, Sam Altman, Adam D’Angelo, Larry Summers, Bret Taylor, Dr. Sue Desmond-Hellmann, Nicole Seligman, and Fidji Simo, with Microsoft’s Dee Templeton holding a non-voting observer seat.
