Google Assistant is now powered by Gemini -- sort of | TechCrunch

Feb 08, 2024 - techcrunch.com
Google is introducing Gemini, its newer GenAI technology, to replace the AI models currently driving Google Assistant's conversational skills. Users will soon be able to access a new Gemini-powered Google Assistant experience via a new Gemini app for Android devices and an updated Google app on iOS. The Gemini-powered Assistant can accept images, text, and voice commands and can perform a range of GenAI tasks. However, the most advanced Gemini model, Gemini Ultra, will not be available for free and will be part of a new subscription, the Google One AI Premium Plan, priced at $20 per month.

The Gemini models are not completely replacing the old models underpinning Google Assistant, with features like quick phrases, setting timers, making calls, and controlling smart home devices still using the old models. The new Gemini-powered Assistant is available in English starting today in the U.S., with more locations and languages, including Japanese and Korean, to be added starting next week.
