Google-backed Anthropic raises $100 mln from South Korea's SK Telecom

South Korea's largest telco, SK Telecom, plans to invest $100 million in U.S. artificial intelligence firm Anthropic to bolster its AI business driven by telecommunications. The two companies aim to jointly develop a global telecommunications-oriented multilingual large language model and construct an AI platform.

Anthropic, a startup that competes with OpenAI in building AI foundation models, is one of the most well-funded AI firms. It raised $450 million from investors, including Google and Spark Capital, in May. SK Telecom, which also invested in Anthropic in May, has not disclosed the size of its previous investment or its stake in the company.
