Google co-founder Sergey Brin says Gemini messed up image generation due to lack of testing

Mar 05, 2024 - indiatoday.in
Google's co-founder and former president, Sergey Brin, admitted that the company "messed up" with its AI chatbot, Gemini, due to insufficient testing. The chatbot was accused of being racist and "too woke" as it refused to generate images of white people and inaccurately depicted historical figures as people of colour. Brin, who made a rare public appearance at San Francisco's AGI House, stated that the incident upset many people and was a result of a lack of testing.

Following the controversy, Google suspended Gemini's ability to generate human figures. However, Google DeepMind boss, Demis Hassabis, announced that the AI tool will be back in the next few weeks. Hassabis acknowledged that Gemini did not work as intended and assured that they are working on its shortcomings. As of now, attempts to generate an image of a person in Gemini will receive a response stating that improvements are being made and the feature will return soon.
