Google is bringing ads to AI Mode | TechCrunch

May 21, 2025 - techcrunch.com
Google plans to integrate ads into its AI Mode in Google Search, where users can ask questions and receive AI-generated responses. Ads will appear "where relevant" and be integrated into AI Mode responses as part of a test. Advertisers using Google's Performance Max, Shopping, and Search campaigns with "broad match" will be eligible to have their ads shown in AI Mode. Initially, U.S. users will see Search and Shopping ads on both desktop and mobile. This move aligns with Google's strategy to maintain its ad revenue, which reached $66.89 billion in Q1 2025, despite some consumer resistance to AI in advertising.

In related developments, Google will also expand ads in its AI Overviews feature, which synthesizes and summarizes answers to queries. These ads will appear on desktop in the U.S. before expanding to select countries and will be labeled as "Sponsored." Google first introduced ads to AI Overviews on mobile last October. While some publishers express concerns about potential impacts on their ad revenue, Google claims to consider these concerns in developing its AI search experiences and advertising products.
