Google launches Code Assist, its latest challenger to GitHub's Copilot | TechCrunch

Apr 09, 2024 - techcrunch.com
Google has introduced Gemini Code Assist, an AI code completion and assistance tool, at its Cloud Next conference. The tool, a rebrand and update of the now-defunct Duet AI, will be available through plugins for popular editors and is designed to compete with GitHub’s Copilot Enterprise. It offers a million-token context window for more accurate code suggestions and large-scale changes, and can be fine-tuned based on a company’s internal code base. It also supports codebases on-premises and those split between different services, a feature not offered by its competitors.

In addition to Code Assist, Google also announced Gemini Cloud Assist, a tool designed to help cloud teams design, operate, and optimize their application lifecycle. It can generate tailored architecture configurations, diagnose issues, and optimize cloud usage to reduce costs or improve performance. Google also launched CodeGemma, an open model fine-tuned for code generation and assistance, now available through Vertex AI.
