Google Prepares for a Future Where Search Isn’t King

Feb 08, 2024 - wired.com
Google's CEO, Sundar Pichai, is steering the company towards a futuristic version of the web, with the rollout of Gemini, Google's most powerful AI model yet. The Gemini chatbot, which was launched to counter OpenAI’s ChatGPT, is going mobile and will be part of a $20 per month Google One subscription package. The chatbot is trained with data in multiple formats, including text, imagery, audio, and code, and can respond using text or voice or by sharing a photo.

Google is also experimenting with using AI to remake its core search interface, launching a generative search experience that serves up chatbot-like answers. While Pichai is open to both paid and ad-supported generative AI experiences, he warns that the technology must be used correctly and responsibly. He acknowledges the potential for the AI to "hallucinate" or provide misinformation, but believes that a generative AI experience should also be "imaginative".
