Google will now let you use AI to build travel itineraries for your vacations | TechCrunch

Mar 27, 2024 - techcrunch.com
Google is introducing a series of updates to its travel services, including an AI-powered feature that enables users to create travel itineraries. The feature, currently available only to U.S. English-speaking users enrolled in Search Labs, generates travel plans based on web content, reviews, photos, and other details submitted to Google. Users can request specific itineraries, such as a three-day historical tour of Philadelphia, and receive a detailed plan including attractions, restaurants, flights, and hotels. However, there are currently no options to purchase services or experiences directly from the itinerary.

In addition, Google is making it easier to find lists of recommendations on Google Maps in select U.S. and Canadian cities. Users can now see lists of recommended places from publishers and other users when they search for a city. The company is also adding tools to customize these lists, allowing users to organize their travel plans or share their favorite spots with friends and family. Users can also link content from their social channels to these lists.

Key takeaways:

  • Google is rolling out an update to its Search Generative Experience (SGE) that will allow users to build travel itineraries and trip ideas using AI.
  • The new feature is currently only available in English in the U.S. to users enrolled in Search Labs, and it draws on ideas from sites across the web, along with reviews, photos and other details that people have submitted to Google for places around the world.
  • Google is also making it easier to discover lists of recommendations in Google Maps in select cities in the U.S. and Canada, and is adding new tools to help users customize lists they create.
  • With these updates, Google is not only competing with startups like Mindtrip and Layla, but also gathering data about travel purchasing intent, which is useful for its wider ad business.
