Google will soon require disclaimers for AI-generated political ads

Sep 06, 2023 - theverge.com
Starting in November, Google will require political advertisers to clearly disclose if their ads were made with AI, particularly if they feature "synthetic content" that depicts realistic-looking people or events. This includes ads that use AI to alter footage of real events or create fabricated ones, with disclaimers such as “This audio was computer generated,” or “This image does not depict real events,” required on images, videos, and audio content. Minor alterations like brightening an image or removing red eye will not require a label.

The move comes as some political campaigns, including the Republican National Committee and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, have begun using AI-generated images in their ads. This has prompted concerns among lawmakers, with Representative Yvette Clarke (D-NY) introducing a bill requiring disclosures for political ads with AI-generated content. The Federal Election Commission is also considering restrictions on such ads.

Key takeaways:

  • Google will soon require political advertisers to disclose when their ads have been made with AI, especially when they feature 'synthetic content' that depicts realistic-looking people or events.
  • The disclosure must be clear and conspicuous, and apply to images, videos, and audio content. It should state things like, 'This audio was computer generated,' or 'This image does not depict real events.'
  • Some political campaigns are already using AI to create ads, including the Republican National Committee and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
  • There are concerns among lawmakers about these AI-generated ads, with Representative Yvette Clarke introducing a bill that requires disclosures for political ads containing AI-generated content. The Federal Election Commission is also considering restrictions on such ads.
