Google's AlloyDB AI transforms databases to power generative AI apps | TechCrunch

Aug 29, 2023 - news.bensbites.co
Google has announced the launch of AlloyDB AI, an integrated set of capabilities built into its fully managed PostgreSQL-compatible database service, AlloyDB. The new feature, available in preview via AlloyDB Omni, provides built-in support for vector embeddings, which are crucial for AI applications. AlloyDB AI aims to help users transform data within databases into vector embeddings with a single line of code, without requiring a specialized data stack. It also offers up to 10x faster vector query performance than standard PostgreSQL.

The new service is integrated with Vertex AI Extensions and LangChain, tools that assist developers in connecting models to proprietary data or third parties. Both on-premises and Vertex AI models can be used to generate embeddings in response to user inputs or automatically create embeddings via inferencing in any generated database columns. AlloyDB AI will also be available later this year on the AlloyDB managed service, and can be added to any AlloyDB deployment at no additional cost.

Key takeaways:

  • Google has announced the launch of AlloyDB AI, an integrated set of capabilities built into AlloyDB for PostgreSQL to support developers in building generative AI apps using their own data.
  • AlloyDB AI provides built-in support for vector embeddings, which are numerical representations of data that allow AI algorithms to better understand the relationships between different types of data.
  • AlloyDB AI aims to help users transform data within databases into vector embeddings with a single line of code and without a specialized data stack.
  • AlloyDB AI will launch later this year on the AlloyDB managed service and can be added to any AlloyDB deployment by installing the relevant extensions at no additional charge.
