Google’s Gemini Turns Pixel 8 Pro Into a True AI Phone

Dec 06, 2023 - gizmodo.com
Google has announced new AI capabilities for its Google Pixel 8 Pro, powered by its new Gemini AI model. The AI features will run directly on users' devices, with the smallest version of the AI, Gemini Nano, built for "on-device tasks" and running on the Pixel 8 Pro's Tensor G3 processor. This means users' data won't leave their device for processing and the AI features can be accessed without internet connection. The features include text summarization, smart replies, and AI-enhanced spell check, with more apps expected to gain access to AI replies next year.

The Android 14 is also set to receive upgrades to handle these AI tasks, with the Android AICore connecting with Gemini Nano to enable more Google AI and app integration. Google's Pixel 8 phone was initially touted as the first real "AI phone", but was light on AI capabilities at launch. However, Google's VP of product management for Pixel, Brian Rakowski, said Gemini will power Assistant with Bard "early next year". Despite the focus on powerful AI models, natively running AI could be the next big benchmark for user-end AI, with companies aiming to pare down these models to fit on limited hardware.

Key takeaways:

  • Android 14 is also getting upgrades to handle these AI tasks, with the Android AICore connecting with Gemini Nano to enable more Google AI and app integration.
