Google’s new Pixel 8 phones reflect a deepening obsession with AI

Oct 04, 2023 - washingtonpost.com
Google has unveiled two new smartphones, the $699 Pixel 8 and $999 Pixel 8 Pro, which feature artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. The devices can summarize webpages, create perfect photos from less-than-ideal ones, and translate foreign text before reading it aloud. The company is also committing to seven years of operating system updates for its Pixel phones, and the Pro model comes with a temperature scanner pending FDA approval.

The AI features include instant story summaries, a "Best Take" feature for photos, a more flexible Magic Eraser tool, a more natural-sounding call screener, and an AI proofreader. However, each feature has its limitations and potential drawbacks, such as the Best Take feature creating photos that depict moments that never happened, and the Magic Eraser tool producing unnatural textures in photos. The call screener feature's AI voice is currently only available in that feature, and while the AI proofreader doesn't use user input to train its AI, users may still want to avoid it to ensure they're not inadvertently working on Google's behalf.
