Google's Project Astra uses your phone's camera and AI to find noise makers, misplaced items and more.

May 14, 2024 - engadget.com
Google showcased its AI technology, Project Astra, at the I/O 2024 developer conference. The technology, developed by Google's DeepMind team, uses a camera-based AI app to interact with its environment in real-time, answering questions and providing information about objects it sees. The AI can remember previous interactions and has a wide range of vocal expressions, similar to Google's Duplex voice assistant.

Project Astra is still in its early stages and there are no clear plans for its launch. However, DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis hinted that these AI assistants could be available through phones or glasses in the future. Some of the capabilities of Project Astra are expected to be incorporated into Google products, like the Gemini app, later this year.

Key takeaways:

  • Google showcased Project Astra at I/O 2024, an AI application that uses a camera-based app to identify and explain objects and situations in real-time.
  • Project Astra demonstrated impressive capabilities such as identifying parts of a speaker, creating alliterations, and remembering the location of objects not currently in view.
  • The AI technology behind Project Astra processes information quickly by encoding video frames, combining video and speech input into a timeline of events, and caching this information for efficient recall.
  • While no specific launch date has been announced, Google's DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis hinted that these AI assistants could be available through phones or glasses in the future.
