Hitachi Rail is partnering with Invest Ontario to invest over C$100 million in upgrading its Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling technology. The new generation of the technology, SelTrac™ (G9), will integrate artificial intelligence, 5G communications, edge and cloud computing. The system aims to offer transit operators worldwide lower costs, a minimized carbon footprint, and an enhanced passenger experience. The investment will also create 100 new jobs in Toronto and retain 1,000 positions at Hitachi Rail’s York Mills office.

The CBTC is a modern urban signalling system that uses wireless communication between trains and infrastructure to operate urban transit and subway systems more efficiently and safely. The SelTrac™ system, invented in Ontario, is the world's first moving block CBTC signalling system and is currently operating in over 100 lines in 40 major cities worldwide. The Ontario government is supporting the investment with $4.5 million in funding through the Invest Ontario Fund.
