How AI could affect Black workers, job replacement: study

Nov 06, 2023 - businessinsider.com
A new survey by Charter Works found that Black workers are more concerned about being replaced by AI than white workers, with 53% of Black respondents expressing concerns about AI replacing their jobs within the next five years, compared to 39% of white respondents. Despite this, Black workers and managers are embracing AI more than their white counterparts, with 45% of Black respondents using AI tools in their day-to-day jobs and 61% enthusiastic about using AI in the future, compared to 51% and 37% of white respondents, respectively.

Experts suggest that the fear among Black workers may be due to a history of new technologies disproportionately impacting workers of color. They argue that companies and the government have a responsibility to make AI more inclusive and protect Black workers from potential consequences. This could include involving them in planning and discussions around the implementation of AI technology, and implementing policies to slow down the roll out of these technologies until adequate protections exist.
