How Alaska Airlines uses AI to cut jet-fuel costs and boost efficiency

Nov 20, 2024 - businessinsider.com
Alaska Airlines has partnered with AI startup Air Space Intelligence to use its Flyways AI Platform, which suggests optimal flight routes based on historical flight data and predicted weather. The partnership, which began three years ago, has resulted in half of the flight plans reviewed by Alaska Airlines' dispatchers including a plan suggested by Flyways. The AI tool has helped reduce fuel consumption by over 1.2 million gallons in 2023, contributing to Alaska's goal of becoming the most fuel-efficient airline by 2025.

The Flyways AI Platform was developed in close cooperation with the airline's stakeholders and works as an assistant to the airline's dispatchers, presenting options when creating a flight plan. The AI tool is not an automated system and a plan isn't put into use until a human dispatcher approves it. The partnership has also benefited Air Space Intelligence, which has grown its headcount and secured contracts with the US Air Force and $34 million in Series B funding.
