How we're helping creators disclose altered or synthetic content

Mar 18, 2024 - blog.google
YouTube is introducing a new tool in Creator Studio that requires creators to disclose when content that could be mistaken for reality is made with altered or synthetic media, including generative AI. The disclosures will appear as labels in the expanded description or on the front of the video player. The aim is to increase transparency and build trust between creators and viewers. Examples of content that require disclosure include using the likeness of a realistic person, altering footage of real events or places, and generating realistic scenes.

However, creators are not required to disclose content that is clearly unrealistic, animated, includes special effects, or has used generative AI for production assistance. They also won't need to disclose if generative AI was used for productivity or when synthetic media is unrealistic and/or the changes are inconsequential. In the future, YouTube may enforce measures for creators who consistently choose not to disclose this information and may add a label even when a creator hasn't disclosed it, especially if the content has the potential to confuse or mislead people.
