HP Inc. to build future products atop grave of flopped 'AI pin'

Feb 19, 2025 - theregister.com
The AI Pin, developed by Humane, was initially anticipated to disrupt the smartphone market but faced significant challenges, including overheating, stability, and usability issues. Despite a software update that improved reviews, the device was recalled in October 2024 due to a fire risk in its charger accessory, affecting 10,500 units. Ultimately, Humane's founders and investors, including Marc Benioff and Sam Altman, could not prevent the device from being labeled a flop. In June, speculation arose that Humane might sell its intellectual property, and by Tuesday, HP confirmed it had acquired key AI capabilities from Humane, including the Cosmos platform, technical talent, and over 300 patents, for $116 million.

HP plans to integrate Humane's technology into its products, creating an intelligent ecosystem across devices like AI PCs, smart printers, and connected conference rooms. This initiative will be driven by a new AI innovation lab called "HP IQ," where former Humane staff will contribute. As a result of the acquisition, the AI Pin will be discontinued, with customer data deleted and server support ending on February 28th. Owners of the $699 device, purchased before November 15th, are not eligible for a refund, highlighting the device's commercial failure.
