Instacart links with Samsung on shoppable fridge tech

Jan 02, 2025 - grocerydive.com
Samsung Electronics has announced a multi-year partnership with Instacart to introduce shoppable refrigerators that utilize artificial intelligence to monitor their contents. This collaboration combines Instacart's product-matching API with Samsung's food-recognition technology, allowing users to order groceries directly from their refrigerator screens. The integration will begin with Samsung's 2025 Bespoke refrigerator models, and existing AI Family Hub+ refrigerators will receive the functionality through a software update. Samsung's AI Vision technology can recognize up to 37 food items and allows manual input for unrecognized items, although it cannot detect items in door bins or freezers.

This partnership represents a significant advancement in the grocery industry's pursuit of a "smart kitchen" experience, aiming to simplify grocery shopping and meal preparation. Instacart's API program, launched in March, facilitates third-party integration of its functionality, with previous collaborations including shoppable ingredients on New York Times Cooking and AI-generated recipes for GE Appliances. Other companies like Kroger and Whole Foods Market have also embraced smart kitchen technology, with initiatives allowing grocery shopping from appliances. Instacart's Chief Product Officer, Daniel Danker, highlighted the partnership's potential to fulfill the long-held dream of self-replenishing refrigerators.
