Intel slaps forehead, says I got it: AI PCs. Sell them AI PCs

Sep 21, 2023 - theregister.com
Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger highlighted the potential of running large language models and machine-learning workloads locally on users' PCs during his keynote at the company's Innovation conference. He credited the work of OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman, Microsoft's CTO Kevin Scott, and Nvidia's boss Jensen Huang in AI, but argued that the bigger opportunity lies in bringing these models to the masses. Gelsinger also showcased various AI-enhanced apps running on Intel's OpenVINO inferencing platform using Intel's hardware.

Intel also disclosed Project Strata, aimed at addressing challenges around zero-touch provisioning, management, security, and patching of appliances for latency and bandwidth-sensitive workloads. The company is extending support for OpenVINO to Arm processors to run AI inference on low power edge systems. Despite the focus on AI inference on PCs or at the edge, Intel still plans to compete with Nvidia and others on the AI training front, teasing a collaboration with Stability AI to build one of the world's largest AI supercomputers in Europe.

Key takeaways:

  • Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger emphasized the potential of running large language models and other machine-learning workloads locally on users' own PCs, which he believes could usher in the next era of the PC: the AI PC generation.
  • Intel showcased various AI-enhanced apps running on its OpenVINO inferencing platform using Intel's hardware, including plugins for image and music generation for popular open source software.
  • Intel disclosed Project Strata, aiming to address challenges around zero-touch provisioning, management, security, and patching of appliances for latency and bandwidth sensitive workloads, AI or otherwise, at the edge of the network.
  • Despite the focus on AI inference, Intel still intends to compete with Nvidia and others on the AI training front, teasing the creation of what Gelsinger claimed would be the 'world's largest AI supercomputer in Europe'.
