Intel Touts Three Future Generations of PC Processors to Take On Apple

Sep 19, 2023 - cnet.com
Intel's CEO, Pat Gelsinger, has unveiled the company's upcoming processors, Meteor Lake, Arrow Lake, Lunar Lake, and Panther Lake, at the Intel Innovation conference. The processors are expected to be released in 2024 and 2025, with Panther Lake's design reportedly well underway. Gelsinger demonstrated a prototype Lunar Lake computer and a wafer built with Intel 18A, the manufacturing process that Intel hopes will help it regain its leadership in chipmaking from TSMC and Samsung.

Intel is also focusing on improving the speed and battery life of its processors, in response to the success of Apple's M1 and M2 MacBooks. The first Panther Lake processors will be built in Intel's fabrication facilities in the first quarter of 2024. The company also showcased new Xeon processors for data centers, announced a deal with Stability.ai for its Gaudi AI accelerators, and introduced new glass substrate technology expected to enhance processor speed, power efficiency, and size later in the decade.

Key takeaways:

  • Intel's new processor, Meteor Lake, will go on sale on December 14, with three other processors, Arrow Lake, Lunar Lake, and Panther Lake, due to arrive in 2024 and 2025.
  • Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger demonstrated a prototype Lunar Lake computer and a wafer built with Intel 18A, the manufacturing process the company hopes will restore its chipmaking leadership.
  • Intel is focusing on improving speed and battery life, attributes that have won plaudits for Apple's M1 and M2 MacBooks, which use Apple's own processors instead of Intel's.
  • Intel also showcased new Xeon processors for data centers, announced that Stability.ai will purchase its Gaudi AI accelerators, and introduced new glass substrate technology expected to make processors faster, more power efficient and larger later in the decade.
