Intel’s New Core Ultra Processors Will Power 'AI PCs,' Whatever That Means

Dec 14, 2023 - gizmodo.com
Intel has announced its latest chips, the Intel Core Ultra line, as part of the current Meteor Lake chipsets. The chips promise significant performance boosts in the integrated GPU and include a new neural processing unit (NPU) for handling AI tasks. The Intel Core Ultra 7 165H, for example, has 16 cores and 22 threads, supporting up to 5.1 GHz frequency, and offers 11% better multi-threaded performance compared to other ultrathin chips. The company claims the chip uses 25% less power than the Intel Core i7-1370P and provides faster graphics performance than the AMD Ryzen 7850U.

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger has declared this the dawn of the "AI PC," with every chip the company makes moving forward having a dedicated NPU. The company plans to have its chips inside 100 million "AI PCs" by 2025. However, despite the emphasis on AI, some processes expected to use the NPU are still taken up by the graphics processor. The company also revealed that several companies, including Acer, Lenovo, LG, Asus, Dell, MSI, and HP, will be releasing Intel Ultra-powered laptops soon.

Key takeaways:

  • Intel's latest chips, including the Intel Core Ultra 7 165H, are designed with a focus on onboard PC AI, promising significant performance boosts and power reductions.
  • The new chips are optimized to power AI models, with features like the Intel AI Boost and a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) to handle AI workloads without draining the battery.
  • Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger has declared the dawn of the "AI PC", with the company planning to have its chips inside 100 million "AI PCs" by 2025.
  • Despite the focus on AI, some processes that might be expected to use the NPU are still handled by the graphics processor, and the transformative applications of AI technology are still several years away.
